Symmetrical internet speeds: why upload matters

Most people check the download speed and ignore the upload. For a modern business that is a mistake: calls, video meetings, cloud apps, backups and cameras all send data out of the building. Symmetrical speeds fix that.

In short

Symmetrical broadband means the upload speed matches the download speed, so a 100Mbps symmetrical connection sends and receives at 100Mbps. Asymmetrical services give a lower upload. Upload matters for video calls, cloud sync, backup, CCTV and file sharing. BTnet leased line bandwidth is symmetrical as standard, at speeds from 2Mbps to 10Gbps.

Symmetrical vs asymmetrical

Every internet connection has two speeds:

  • Download: data coming into your site, such as web pages, streamed video and files you open from the cloud
  • Upload: data leaving your site, such as your side of a video call, files you save to the cloud, backups and camera footage

On an asymmetrical connection the upload speed is lower than the download speed. Many broadband services work this way, including many full fibre packages. On a symmetrical connection the two are the same.

BTnet is symmetrical. BT's terms list uncontended, symmetrical bandwidth as a standard part of the service, and BT offers speeds up to 10Gbps upload and download. Choose a 200Mbps port and you get 200Mbps in each direction.

Why upload matters more than it used to

The internet used to be mostly about downloading. Business use has changed:

What you doWhy it needs upload
Video meetingsEvery camera in the office sends a continuous video stream out of the building
Cloud callingEach call sends your voice out as well as receiving the other side
Microsoft 365 and cloud appsSaving, syncing and sharing files all upload to the cloud
Offsite and cloud backupWhole servers and file shares are copied out, often every night
CCTV and remote monitoringCameras stream or upload footage to the cloud or to remote viewers
Large file transferDesign, media, survey and legal files are sent to clients and suppliers
Hosting and remote accessStaff working from home pull files from servers at your site

When upload runs out, the symptoms are familiar: frozen video, choppy calls, slow saves and backups that are still running in the morning. Often the download speed is fine; the bottleneck is the other direction.

A worked example: uploading a backup

This is an illustration using simple arithmetic, not a measurement. It shows how long a 10GB upload would take at different upload speeds, ignoring overheads:

Upload speedApproximate time to upload 10GB
10MbpsAbout 2 hours 15 minutes
100MbpsAbout 13-14 minutes
1GbpsUnder 2 minutes

The sum: 10GB is about 80,000 megabits, divided by the upload speed in megabits per second. Real transfers take a little longer, because BT's terms say throughput is typically 5-10% below the port speed due to network and IP overheads, and the far end has limits too.

The point is not the exact numbers but the scale: if the upload is a tenth of the download, every task that sends data out takes ten times as long as it would on a symmetrical line of the same headline speed, and it competes with everything else going out at the same time.

Symmetrical and uncontended: why both matter

Symmetry is half the story. A symmetrical service that is shared with other customers can still slow down at busy times. BTnet is symmetrical and uncontended: BT describes it as 100% uncontended and dedicated, so the bandwidth you buy is yours in both directions all day. See contended vs uncontended.

It also has no fair usage policy, according to BT's help pages, so heavy uploads such as nightly backups or continuous camera streams are not a problem for the contract.

Headline speed vs upload speed

When you compare connections, the headline figure is usually the download speed. Two connections with the same headline can behave very differently for a business:

  • Check the upload figure separately. On an asymmetrical service it may be a fraction of the headline speed.
  • Think about simultaneous use. Ten people on video calls each send a stream out at the same time, so upload fills up faster than you might expect.
  • Remember the other traffic. Cloud sync, updates and backups running in the background all use upload while people are on calls.
  • Look at busy-hour performance. A symmetrical service that is shared can still slow down when the network is busy; a dedicated one does not have that problem.

On a symmetrical line the headline figure is the upload figure too, which makes capacity planning simpler: one number covers both directions.

How much upload do you need?

Start from what leaves your building at the busiest moment of the day:

  1. List the things that upload: calls, video meetings, cloud sync, backups, cameras, remote workers pulling files.
  2. Estimate how many happen at the same time at peak, not on average.
  3. Check whether heavy jobs, such as backups, can be scheduled outside working hours.
  4. Add headroom for growth, and remember you can flex the bandwidth within your bearer later.

Our bandwidth sizing guide goes through this in more detail, and our CCTV and VoIP pages cover two of the most upload-hungry uses. Once your line is live, test both directions using the method in our leased line speed test guide.

Getting symmetrical speeds with BTnet

BTnet port speeds run from 2Mbps to 10Gbps, in steps based on Ethernet speeds, all symmetrical. The access bearer sets the ceiling: 100Mbps, 1Gbps or 10Gbps Ethernet fibre bearers, with some sites served by other bearer types BT confirms at quote. Choosing a bearer with headroom makes future upgrades a simple flex. See BTnet speeds and leased line bearers.

Frequently asked questions

What does symmetrical broadband mean?

It means the upload speed is the same as the download speed. A 100Mbps symmetrical connection uploads and downloads at 100Mbps.

Is a leased line symmetrical?

BTnet is. BT's terms list uncontended, symmetrical bandwidth as a standard part of the service, at port speeds from 2Mbps to 10Gbps.

Is full fibre broadband symmetrical?

It depends on the package. Many full fibre broadband packages offer a lower upload than download speed. Check the upload figure, not just the headline speed.

Do I need symmetrical internet?

If your team uses video calls, cloud calling, cloud file sync, offsite backup or CCTV, upload matters and a symmetrical line helps. Our bandwidth sizing guide helps you decide.

Why is my upload speed slower than my download?

Most likely your connection is asymmetrical, which is common on broadband. It can also be your Wi-Fi, firewall or device. A symmetrical leased line gives the same speed in both directions.
